Knox Box Information and Requirements

The International Fire Code 2012 Edition Sections 506: Where access to or within a structure or
an area is restricted because of secured openings or where immediate access is necessary for
life-saving or fire-fighting purposes, the fire code official is authorized to require a key box to
be installed in an approved location.


The key box shall be approved and contain keys to gain necessary access as
required by the fire code official. An approved lock shall be installed on gates or similar barriers
when required by the fire code official.


The building’s operator (responsible person) shall immediately notify the fire code official
and provide the new key when a lock is changed or re-keyed. The key to such lock shall be
secured in the key box.


Fire Code Requirement to install a “Knox-Box” Rapid Entry System

  1. All commercial buildings with fire alarms and fire protection sprinkler systems.
  2. All commercial buildings requiring a fire department inspection for a Certificate of
    Occupancy.
  3. Entry keys/cards to all parts of the building are to be placed in the key box and maintained
    in accordance with Section 506.
  4. Install the key box in an approved location – typically 5 to 6 feet from ground level and to
    the left of the entry.
